Welcome to POW – Power of Women Festival Copenhagen. A festival showcasing art works by women as well as the women themselves within the genres of film, music, theatre, design, literature, and architecture.
Why do we need a festival focused on women in a country known for equality? Because we are not there yet. Within the available cultural expressions of today, the representation of female narratives are often exceptions to the rule, while masculine outlooks are being presented as gender neutral tales, and therefore treated as more relevant to the public in general. The consequence of this tendency is, that female artists and creatives are often not being heard or given the opportunity to reach their full potential, and that we, as a society, miss out on their important and diverse perspectives.
POW is for everyone. Women, men, creative professionals, and not least the public. POW is a festival for all of us who long for a more balanced media image of what’s really going on in the arts. POW aims to ask the questions, and to create space for women’s voices to be heard in the debate. We want to shine a light on what’s happening with women in the arts and culture, and to inspire and motivate more women to be ambitious, brave, and dedicated in their work.
POW 2017 is a three day pilot festival, meant to create awareness of the need for a bigger focus on female perspectives. The ambition is to launch the full version of the festival in 2018. Here we will include a series of interdisciplinary workshops and events, bringing together women professionals across the creative industries, and offering support and advice on how to successfully tackle key tasks such as development, pitching, sharing, and sales.
Behind POW we have a highly experienced woman: Füsun Eriksen, senior consultant for business growth at Danish Cultural Institute and former CEO of BUSTER film festival for children and young adults. Füsun has many years of experience from advertising and the film industry, and she has worked with companies such as Warner Brothers/RCA Columbia Pictures and Trust Film Sales/Zentropa, creating festival- and sales strategies for Lars von Trier, Susanne Bier, Thomas Vinterberg, Lone Scherfig, Per Fly, Anders Morgenthaler, and Lukas Moodysson.
